Why Getting a Good Night’s Sleep is Critical to Your Well-Being

American adolescents and adults simply are not getting enough sleep, and that is a very big problem for their well-being.The CDC calls insufficient sleep a “public health problem,” because lack of sleep can increase an individual’s likelihood of suffering from hypertension, diabetes, depression, obesity, and some forms of cancer. Additionally, it can jeopardize your health and productivity during your day-to-day routine.

The Characteristics Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System found that 36.1% of 25–35 year olds fell asleep unintentionally during at least one day in the past month, and that 7.2% of 25–35 year olds had “nodded off or fell asleep” while driving during the past month. Fighting to stay awake at work decreases your productivity, and “nodding off” while driving drastically increases the likelihood of an automobile accident. The National Department of Transportation actually estimates that driving while sleepy is the cause of 1,550 fatalities and 40,000 injuries every year in the US.

Insufficient sleep can clearly have potential long-term and immediate health outcomes, but Americans adolescents and adults are still struggling to get the daily recommended amount of sleep.

The National Institute of Health recommends that adults get 7–8 hours of sleep per night and teens get 9–10 hours of sleep per nights, yet only 31% of high school students slept 8 hours or more. Additionally, a whopping 30% of adults sleep less than 6 hours a night.
